Artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, unlike the natural intelligence displayed by humans and animals, which involves consciousness and emotionality. AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is a level of computer intelligence that fully matches human intelligence.
In computer science for example, the term artificial intelligence (AI) refers to “any human-like intelligence exhibited by a computer, robot, or other machine.” Furthermore, in popular usage, artificial intelligence refers to “the ability of a computer or machine to mimic the capabilities of the human mind” such as recognising objects, understanding and responding to language, making decisions, solving problems. As well as other capabilities to perform functions a human might perform, such as greeting a hotel guest or driving a car.₁
Artificial Intelligence & Flynotes
Using AI technology, Flynotes extracts medical context from a patient’s medical history stored in the Practice Management System. The AI role is to understand the natural language that is stored in the form of medical notes, which is where NLP (Natural Language Processing), a subset of Artificial Intelligence, is utilised in Flynotes.
CTO of Flynotes, Magnus, discusses the use of AI, “Our NLP engine on the Flynotes platform, processes the unstructured, natural language information data stored in the PMS, and in turn extracts and structures everything that is of relevance to determine the patient’s medical profile i.e. medications, medical conditions, findings and medical history.”
By using a NLP technology, Flynotes sets out a consenting process for the patient that mirrors the natural conversion with the dentist. Ultimately, Flynotes is able to process and analyse large amounts of natural language data stored in Practice Management Systems and apply this to the patient’s tailored consent.
